Strength of Stars - Tara Balam

II  Tadeva lagnam, sudinam Tadeva
Thara balam, Chandra balam Tadeva
Vidya balam, daiva balam Tadeva
Lakshmipathengri yugam smaraami II

This is the one Shloka we often listen whenever we attend any auspicious event. This Shloka is chanted when we are about to begin the pooja.  The meaning of the Shloka is that whenever we worship lord Lakshmipati’s holy feet having faith in him that is the best lagna, the auspicious day which has the strength of all stars, strength of  the moon, it has the power of knowledge and the blessings of all gods whom we worship.

We check various strengths to select a muhoortham for any auspicious event that we want to perform. For this we check for Tara balam (strength of Stars), Chandra balam, Guru Balam, Surya balam, lagna Shuddhi etc.  Getting all these strengths in a specific time which we prefer is not possible. To get out of such doshas and correct the things those are not in a good position we must worship Lord Vishnu’s (Lakshmipati) holy feet. He is the tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga, Karana. Hence worshiping him will result in making the things right and remove all the doshas.

Tara balam is the strength provided by the stars in ones horoscope or the particular time which we choose to celebrate an auspicious event. We all know that there are 27 stars according to our Vedas and Indian astrology. These stars position needs to be  in a favorable position in casting a muhoortham. It is calculated that the Moon takes 27 days (roughly) to pass through these stars. The daily motion of the moon decides the strength of the star from that of one’s birth Star(Janma nakshatra). The transit of the Moon one star to another marks the favorable and unfavorable to one’s birth star. This is divided into three sets consisting 9 in each (Navakam). It is calculated from the position of daily star from ones birth star. If the result is 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 or 0 then it is taken as good otherwise bad.

Chandra Balam means the position of the Moon from the Lagna. It is calculated from the native’s Rasi 1, 3, 6,7, 10 and 11 are good.

Surya Balam is also calculated from the native Rasi. This is calculated as 3,6,10 and 11(as per gochara phalam).

Guru Balam or daiva balam is calculated from the native Rasi 2, 5, 7, 9 and 11. If Guru Aspect is present on the lagna it will give strength to the lagna and removing the bad effect over it.

The word Lagna Shuddhi stands for lagna without any planets in it.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are said to be auspicious for any event.

तदेव लग्नं सुदिनं तदेव ताराबलं चंद्रबलं तदेव।

विद्या बलं दैवबलं तदेव लक्ष्मीपतेः तेंघ्रिऽयुगं स्मरामि॥

If I am not wrong,

Stars never have specific strength in astrology !. Tara balam has got nothing to do with the strength of stars. it is the a method to find out the auspiciousness of moons placement or the time or the muhurtha when placed in particular nakshatra.

For an example, if we take this with respect to Travel time (Muhurtha),
it is considered as an auspicious time to travel/starting any plan of Action for a person who born in Vishaka nakshatra, if he starts his travel on the day falling on Jyeshtha & Vishakha nakshatra which are Pratyak tara's for Vishakha star.

Like wise we can explore much more on the concept of "Tara bala".it seems to be a small concept but given paramount importance in the major areas of vedic astrology, especially in Muhurthas. There is also a concept called "Hora kala". I think this is a different issue.

In KP Astrology Planets are under the influence of a Lord of The Star under which the Planet is posited. Now this Star lord may get afflicted or benefic depending on sub lord -- a very important concept in KP.
